I need some help, I'm doing my homework and my brain is totally fried.
The question is:
Where is identity? By whom?
For example, in movies, magazines, art history, etc. How do certain films protray young people, women, and men? Do these portrayals affect how you feel about yourself, how you wish to be viewed or what you want?
I need help on this question: How do certain films protray young people, women, and men?
I have to go and finish my other homework and you better comment! PLEASE!
Thanks guys

I'll try to answer the question, even if I'm not too sure if what I'm saying is the "right answer." I think it really depends on which "certain film" you're talking about. When I think of "certain films," I either think of a type of film (example: chic flick, horror movie, etc) or a specific film (example: Passion of the Christ, Chronicles of Narnia, etc).
For example, horror films would usually portray most of the young women to be scared and the young men may be kinda creeped out but they're brave and/or they find some way of getting out of things. The ladies often seem to be more dependent on the guy for protection and safety, and sometimes the female plays the role of "damsel in distress." Again, it really depends on the film itself (which is obviously unique); not all horror films may seem to portray these groups of people in the same way.
For the other example, "Lord of the Rings" shows that young people are loyal, decent, hard-working, and real.
So those are obviously a couple examples and I have no clue if this is making any sense or if this is answering your question at all or what. But you know I tried. I hope this helped you out some, and I highly recommend that you others also try contributing to help with Aimee's homework :)
ok, here I go...
People in movies are dramatic. The character's lives always have some kind of drama in them (to make the movie/book...or whatever it is...interesting to the viewer). Us as a sociaty look at these images thrown at us and we begin to think our lives should be the same, we think it is the norm. This also goes on how we look at ourselves phisically. The people portrayed in these cinamatic thrillers ARE our norm, therefor we need to look like them, act like them, be like them, ect. in order to belong, to be loved, and, in the end, to have a good life! If we don't live up to the norm, we often feel like we aren't living a life that is going to fufill our desires, and we will feel empty. That's where God comes in! The world is teaching us that only being like the people we see in movies, magazines, ect. will fufill what only God can fufill! It's a brainwashing conspiracy I'm telling you!!!
to answer your question bluntly and obviously aimee, certain films portray young people, women, and men by making the characters different, depending on which movie you are watching.
since your teacher, like most, is probably wanting you to go a bit more in-depth, i'll give you more of an answer.
people in general are usually portrayed as being stupid and easily killed (like friends of the hero/heroine(s) in horror movies) or triumphic over anything (like hero/heroine(s) in general). most adventure/horror/romance/drama/etc. movies will have a hero or heroine who has to take on a challenge, then beat it. if you want to go even deeper, the idea that man dominates everything in the world originally comes from the bible where god makes man to give him domain over every creature and such on earth (sorry, i can't think of the verse or anything). this idea is very much liked by americans, who clearly is one of, if not the most dominant country on the planet (at least that's what they say). since hollywood is THE place to make movies, and hollywood is IN america, it makes sense that in most of the movies make there, there is bound to be the theme that man is dominant over all...this includes robots.
individually, both women and men are usually dominant to some extent, because in most movies, both the hero and his "damsel in distress" (or the other way around) will survive. this is because of the world dominance thing. in movie land, two people will probably be left; a guy and a girl. guess why.
women, depending on which movies you watch, are either heroines or eye candy. pretty self-explanitory, really. the heroine movies are for the women's rights fanatics, and the eye candy movies are for guys who probably wouldn't sit through a movie otherwise.
guys are pretty much the same way, except they're most often the heros because they can just rip their shirts off at any point in an action movie, so there's really no need for guys to be there solely for looks.
anywho, hope that helps aimee...as you can tell, i was kinda bored and jumped at the chance to write something...ahem...yeah.
heck yes i did. someone has drugs (i win) on his mind...heroin and heroine are two different things children. the first one is the bad one. DON'T DO DRUGS (i win)!
I'll show YOU films that win awards!!! *qua-psh*
since when are there any "normal" FBI officers going around talking to cannibals because they're trying to catch a transsexual serial killer? that's supposed to be normal? the point is, she still perseveres in the end, and saves someone, making her a hero. so there.
k, first of all, she's a rookie FBI agent who's assigned to a serial killer. i mean, she hasn't even really become an agent yet, and they send her to find a killer that nobody else can catch. it's not even just a wierd guy with "behavioral problems", it's a killer. that's not normal.
second, she was assigned to get hannibal to talk about buffalo bill, not to make sure that he stayed locked up. ergo, she didn't fail her job, she succeeded.
first of all, you would've been killed in the first 5 minutes of the movie. second, you're not even arguing a point anymore. therefore, you lose, i win, and that's the end of it.
k, first of all...actually, no...the ONLY thing i have to say to that is that i've already won, and clearly, out of despiration, you're making up arguments that have nothing to do with your "theories". notice how i beat you every time while you just think of insults and make up new "theories" because your other ones don't hold up?
i'm actually going to add something else, which is just that i noticed it took you a couple days to comment...is that because it took you a couple days to watch the movie again? just saying...
i KNOW that i won already. it was just a matter of you admitting that i won.
